Aristotle Argument Unmoved Mover Description Divine Nature - 275 Words

Aristotle's Argument for an â€Å"Unmoved Mover† and his Description of the Divine Nature (Essay Sample) Content: Josephine Sarange Theory 16/04/2015 Aristotle's argument for an unmoved mover and his description of the divine nature Aristotle describes the unmoved mover as the first effect that puts the cosmos into motion. He argues that movement exists in the universe and moving things were set into motion by something else; if moving things were set into motion by something else then there exists an infinite cause which therefore means that there existed something that caused the first movement, (27). It will be unacceptable for Aristotle if one argues that all things are in reality at rest and may certainly not have had a preliminary point. This is simply because Aristotle would want to know why they were at rest and what exactly caused them to rest since being at rest means the end which then brings up the question of what precisely made the things to move before resting. All these simply lead Aristotle to the thought of motion and time bringing concluding that both motion and time are eternal. Aristotle thinks that locomotion is the primary source of motion. According to him a constant motion is primary because of its simplicity and completeness, (76). He states that only spherical motion can be simple and complete or continual and rectilinear motion can never be continual but composite simply because a motion along a set line must definitely come to an end and to be continual must make a reverse. A motion that moves along a set line and does not make a reverse is incomplete. He adds that only a spherical motion is eternal and the other sorts of motion can never be eternal because they have initial, central and ending points unlike the spherical motion which is endless. He then argues that a continual motion is passed on to the heavenly planet by the first mover, which then sends out motion to other things. Its crystal clear that something can only move because of a given cause from something else, but what exactly caused the start of motion in the universe? Since motion is a time based activity, things could not have been moving always without a given cause. This requires us to look for the exact cause of the motions beginning in the universe. This is the point where Aristotle thinks that there should have been an eternal cause of the motion in the world. According to him, motion being an essential element in the world leads us to consider the presence of something else at the exterior of the world which is not restricted by motion and time, (98). We are simply looking for the infinite uncaused causer of all. Aristotle however tries to describe the unmoved mover as a substance which according to him, exists by need and is eternal. Anything eternal is never formed or destroyed but has and will at all times exist. Its to our knowledge that the existence of a substance is independent and exists by virtue of itself. On the contrary, Aristotle illustrates things as having unintentional existence whose being depends on something else, (Harold, 87). Take a look at the following entity, a human being called John, according to Aristotle, this entity is a substance and portrays the state of it being human. John is naturally human and the fact that john is called john, and is an African philosopher and is angry or hungry today is unintentional. So Aristotle understands that the unmoved mover and human being are a kind of substance. Aristotle clearly gives three different categories of substance, the sensible and perishable substances, the immovable substances also known as non-sensible and eternal substances and the sensible and eternal substances. Human beings are most familiar with the sensible and perishable substances like the animals and plants, which can be changed in different ways, depending on something itself or the place or the quality or the quantity of the thing. Change depending on something itself happens in a way that the thing changes to something else; Andrea describes this change as a mere generation and destruction, (105). Change depending on place involves movement whereby something moves from one place to the next. Change depending on quantity involves increase or decrease of something and finally change depending on quality involves alteration of something that may be caused by an unnecessary feature. Aristotle thinks that during the change process there has to be a third element, that wh ich changes from one thing to another, he refers to it as The matter. The substances that are sensible and eternal are mainly the heavenly bodies which actually move but eternally. The immovable substances are related to religious studies while the sensible substances are related to physics, (David, 79). Unlike other substances like human beings the unmoved mover has a very unique feature of never moving or changing. When Aristotle talks of movement, he doesnt exactly refer to the physical movement alone but the state of generally being affected by an external element, (Lindsay, 101). For example, look at john again. He has a human quality plus the accidental qualities like being angry. Lets say as the day passes his girlfriend surprises him with a gift and makes him very happy. John still has the quality of human but in addition has the accidental quality of happiness. In his case john was moved by his girlfriend by effecting an unintentional change on him. According to Aristotle, things are always changing in the universe and so as to give this assumption a meaning we will have to assume the presence of time. In the context of change there should be a previous to and subsequent to i.e., a before and an after; like my above example, John was at the beginning angry but later was happy. Change provides an implication of sequential events and the sequential events involve time, (Julius, 63). At this point we may ask ourselves, where exactly do change and time come from? But according to Aristotle an eternal substance in the universe which keeps things in motion eternally must be in existence. He continues by saying that nothing really moves randomly in the absence of something else which causes its movement. Therefore one could theoretically outline all the motions in the universe to some fascinating force to help know all the movements in the cosmos, (115). Aristotle expands his argument on the issue of the unmoved mover by introducing the object of desire and the object of thought. According to him these objects move without being moved. Lets look at a great example on the object of desire; a very handsome man relaxing in a restaurant having tea, he concentrates on taking his tea as he reads his newspaper, now imagine an exceptionally attractive lady in the same restaurant takes notice of him, having been attracted to him she starts a conversation. In this case the man is the unmovable mover being the object of desire for the lady. The man simply stimulates the lady to come to him hence the unmoved mover because he in no way engaged himself in any of the activities to bring the lady to him or star the conversation. Unlike the handsome man, the motion in the universe is not accidental but caused by the nature on the unmoved mover. The physical attractiveness is not an inbuilt human being quality but exists accidentally just like in the case of an earlier example of John. This then implies that the unmoved mover has an essential quality and not accidental w...

Integration Of Threat Intel And Incident Response. In Today’S

Integration of Threat Intel and Incident Response In today’s modern world of security threats, intelligence and the ability to respond to incidents are the keys to survival. As technology continues to change and advance, we also must change our security procedure and techniques. Dina Evans from LookingGlass has a good definition of threat intelligence, â€Å"We define threat intelligence as the combination of technical and contextual information regarding existing or emerging threats from all available sources. It has been evaluated and analyzed for accuracy, timeliness, and relevancy, and implemented among an organization’s tactical, operational, and strategic stakeholders.† (Evans, 2016). The process of threat intelligence feeds into all†¦show more content†¦The challenges arise from the fact that when using multiple sources, it can be easy to miss the connections between data points or to misunderstand the significance of noise when reviewing the massive amount of data that must be crunched, clea nsed and turned into useful intelligence. The best way to address this issue is the use of a threat intelligence management platform. The â€Å"threat intelligence management platform† filters, gathers and analyzes data, and then delivers it in a standard format for inclusion in a variety of security systems and appliances (Comparing). Finally, it is important to remember that the organizations budget will play a major role in the choice of selecting threat intelligence services. The appropriate choice is to strive for consistency when interviewing potential service providers. Threat Kill Chain The threat kill chain reveals the stages of a cyber attack from early reconnaissance to the goal of information exfiltration. The kill chain can also be used as an organizational tool to help continuously improve network defense (Kill Chain). Threats must progress through seven stages of the model; the first stage is reconnaissance. Reconnaissance occurs when the attacker does a background check on the target before attacking them. Most reconnaissance is accomplished with the help of the Internet and social media accounts. The second stage is the weaponization phase. Being Born And Raised As A Buddhist - 2350 Words

Being born and raised as a Buddhist, I try to live with the basic five percepts, which are withholding myself from stealing, lying, taking another living being’s life, involving in any sexual misbehaviors, and drinking alcohol or doing drugs. When people ask my why I follow those percepts or who tells me to follow those rules, I tell them following those precepts are entirely my choice, they keep me grounded and focused in life. It would be a lie if I were to admit that I have never broken any of those five percepts. When I was little, at an age where I didn’t really understand those percepts, I used to take other’s pencils or erasers without telling them, I used to step on bugs/ insects, or tell the adults to kill those living beings for me, I used to lie effortlessly to have things my way, and I used to drink wine which was a terrible turnout because my body rejects any form of alcohol. As I get older, I come to realize the five percepts’ purposes and po tentials it could result in my life. It became easier for my to keep four out of five percepts unbroken. The one percept that I always have trouble following is lying or making wrongful speech that could possibly hurt others physically and mentally. I believe that this percept is about oneself. It is deeper than delivering wrongful speech; it is about being honest, humble, and not being judgmental to oneself and others. The Rise Of Nazism And The Holocaust - 1668 Words

History involves the study of past events that have shaped the world today. These events range from scientific discoveries, revolutions to world wars. Historical events have causal factors and in certain instances can be traced to an individual level. Therefore, certain individuals do matter in history directly altering the course the world takes. Adolf Hitler is one of these individuals. Hitler, the figurehead of the Nazi regime that led Germany to World War II, and instigated one of the most infamous genocides in history, the Holocaust. The impact Adolf Hitler had on history, namely, the rise of Nazism and the Holocaust is also due to a favourable set of circumstances that without them Hitler himself would not have been enough. There is no denying that Hitler was not ‘Charismatic’, a leader that brought a type of cult following for millions. Seen to possess heroic qualities at a time of domestic and international crisis for the German population. Hitler created a new political theory ‘National Socialism’. The population was viewed as a ‘volk’ (people) consisting of Bavarians, Thuringians, Prussians, Rhinelanders, Sudetens and Austrians all of German racial stock and Hitler their Fueher. The political slogan Hitler created, ‘Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer (One people, one empire, one leader) sums up his leadership as the head of the leader cult. Desalination of Seawater May be Our Answer - 668 Words

Situation/context With the increasing demand for water placing pressure on existing supplies, seawater presents an enormous source to satisfy demand. However, seawater cannot be directly consumed and therefore, desalination of seawater is necessary to make it safe for consumption [1]. The current methods involving desalination utilize mostly non-renewable energy sources such as coal and gas to provide the necessary energy for the process to take place. Identification of problems The current method used to desalinate water is multi-stage desalination (thermal desalination), which requires a significant amount of energy. As research has shown, for every cubic meter of desalinated water, 1.3 kWh of electricity and 48.5 kWh of heat are consumed [1] which shows that more than 90% percent of the energy supplied is wasted as heat. Furthermore, the current methods utilize non-renewable sources of energy, which eventually produce greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. These non-renewable sources of energy, mainly fossil fuels are short in supply and eventually will run out. Therefore, it is important to look for an environment-friendly long-term solution. Direct marketing is more personalized and aimed at individual markets rather than to the mass i.e. aimed at micro markets, who are the customers. According to Andrew R. et al. (2006), direct marketing remains the most effective channel for providing customers with personalized marketing that they prefer. We have found retail marketing very costly to us, and in the end we have been passing that cost to the consumers. This cost is increased by the inventory cost and ware housing cost. We have not been fixing prices for our electronic products and most of you have been selling at different prices. This has placed us at a disadvantage since competing companies sell their products at a uniform price throughout the country. We have also found that, most companies are making the product to consumer specification and that is the direction we want to take. We want to start making customized items as per the customer specification.   We have found it necessary to adopt a production model bases on the model of ‘Just-in-time, build-to-order’ as put forward by James Fulkerson (2003) of Dell Company – United States. This will help us to include new technology to orders placed by the customers. However, we are not to get into marketing alone. We want you to partner with us. We want you to move from you shops and establish a web-based shop. In turn we are going to establish a highly efficient sales team in our marketing department. You shall do the advertising of the product and then customers shall make orders to you. However we shall also partner in advertisement but for us at the company level and you at the distributor level.   The customers shall place order to you and you shall forward your order to the company with the required specification.   We can guarantee to you that, your orders shall be ready with the first five days of placing. The customer should have the orders delivered within the first 7 to 10 days. You shall be paid 8% commission for every delivery you make. This is surely a better method of improving our company sales and in advance your business sales. However it needs all of us to start working serious to maintain the market segment that we have acquired and that is a sure way to move about it. Louisa Gradgrind Essay Example For Students

Louisa Gradgrind Essay Louisa is very close to Tom, and at first he is the only person she cares about, and she decides to marry Mr Bounderby because of him. She talks to Tom about what she feels and opens up to him and explains what she feels, she also talks to him about fancy, which she wouldnt do to anybody else, she also talks about how she feels about Sissy to him. But Tom is eventually self-centred and insensitive towards everyone including Louisa and is portrayed as a hypocrite. Louisas mother is a hypochondriac, she is constantly ill or says she is, this is her way of hiding from people and ultimately hiding her feelings, she is pale and weak from her relationship with her husband, she is an example of what the facts and quite often disregards Louisa and uses the excuse that she is ill as a reason not to speak to her daughter. She is ignorant of Louisas struggle, which she has probably experienced herself. Louisa doesnt seem to need her mother and has probably grown up without her. Mr Gradgrind loves his children and genuinely feels that the facts method is a good one, which his children would thank him for teaching them. He teaches them nothing but facts and expects them to grow up and be important and respected members of society as he is. And when he finds them peeking at the circus he is so shocked because he doesnt understand why they would want to see the circus with everything they have. Louisa is a attractive and sensitive, and curious to the world of imagination that her father has never let her know. She is chaffing against her upbringing and has a starved imagination was can see this from when we first meet her and Dickens describes her as Pretty. Would have been self willed but for her bringing up which I think is very true, her fathers method of teaching children has left her almost dead mentally and tired and she says I am tired. She hides her emotion that is making her tired and depressed, she seems as if she daydreams quite a bit. I think that she would be a very different person if it wasnt for her upbringing, she would be more caring and loving, as would Tom. I think she is caring and loving but she hides it inside with all her emotions. Im interested to see what will happen to her, I would like to see her get married to someone nice and get away from her father but I think she will marry Mr Bounderby and end up being very depressed. But I hope she doesnt because Louisa is a very interesting and complex character who will develop well.

The floor to mop Essay Example

The floor to mop Paper Its a very angry letter which sounds as if it needs forcing out. The floor to mop The food to shop Then the chicken to fry I got company to feed These could be said with so much rage that when she says the word, she spits it out because she struggles to say and she has too force it out. The anger causes her to spit out these words, its like she doesnt want to do what she is doing anymore, she wants to rest from it and stop working. Stanza one is a completely different format to stanza two onwards. This is because stanza one has 14 lines, which every two lines rhyme. There are also no commas. Whereas stanza two onwards are all quatrains which is a four lined stanza where line two rhymes with line four. This stanza also has all the punctuation needed, commas and full stops where required. From the second stanza she is so frustrated that she begins to beg nature to release her from this never ending circle she is trapped in. She wants to taste freedom. Feel the rain. Rain on me, rain She shouts that. She wants to feel the rain she wants to feel alive and get all the things the people who arent trapped in working the entire time feel. The release of happiness that you get from enjoying nature, she wants that. Fall softly, dewdrops And cool my brow again She wants and needs to be cooled down. She wants the sun to glow down on her gently, a friendly glow that will comfort her and allow her to feel full of glee and feel alive. Shine on me, sunshine. Repetition is used her, the word Shine is repeated, this denotes how she wants some joy to shine into her life, she so do desperate for it that she repeats just so she knows that the sun can hear her. She is begging the sun to shine on her so that she can be covered with a warm love. This whole stanza shows how she wants a cool down from all the work that she has been doing. It describes some of her deepest feelings, her deepest desires. This is to have a rest. Stanza three shows a much more aggressive side to her hidden emotions. It uses an illustration in this stanza. The illustration is of her floating in the air. To get this illustration you must read line three of stanza three where it says, Let me float across the sky This makes me think, why she would want to float across the sky? Well, she is very stressed and needs to relax, and what is more relaxing than being able to watch the world go past you, as you would if you were in the air looking down. The aggressive side comes in the first two lines of stanza three. Storm, blow me from here With your fiercest winds This is quite violent; it shows how strongly she feels towards this subject. She is so bored and frustrated by this that is making her aggressive. She wants the wind to b low her away from the lifestyle she has. She wants it to remove her from her situation. She is begging nature to do this for her because she cannot do it herself. She either doesnt have the strength or it is not allowed in her culture. From this stanza we realise that all she wants is a rest. We know this because in line four it says Til I can rest again This tells us that she doesnt want to leave what she is doing; she only wants to have a rest. Maybe a holiday or something. I will elaborate further on this rest when I go on to talk about the next stanza. This stanza shows that she wants to get away from it for a rest so she is asking nature to move her out of her situation. Stanza four shows a much calmer side to her desires, this is the opposite of the desires in the previous stanza, maybe she has more than one desire that she wants to fulfil. The south of the USA is very hot, so working as hard as this woman does would be very tiring. So this stanza seems to be appealing to cool her down, similar to the dewdrops in stanza two. I know that she is appealing to nature to cool her down because it says, Fall gently, snowflakes Cover me with white This shows that she wants to be cooled down by the snow. She wants to feel the cold on her cheek, in a hope to bring some joy now that she has cooled down. With the amount of work that this woman does she will be very hot. Snow is cold and would be perfect when it comes to cooling her down. This stanza goes on further to say, Cold icy kisses This shows that she wants to be touched by the snow. To cool her down. The word cold is used in this line, which shows that she knows that its cold and will cool her down. She seems to hate being hot so she is begging nature to cool her down. The line that follows also suggests that the intense heat that she gets is preventing her from sleeping. I know this because it says, Let me rest tonight She just wants one nights rest. There are so many things that are preventing her from sleeping. These are heat, working late and possibly the children keeping her awake. The lists of things that are keeping her awake are endless. She doesnt enjoy it. The poor woman is exhausted and is struggling to go on especially with the amount of work she actually has to do. She is begging nature to help her have this one nights rest that she so desires and needs. This stanza shows that she wants to cool down so that she can have at least one night sleep. The final stanza is different, it lists all the natural elements, and it says it like this, Sun, rain, curving sky Mountain, oceans, leaf and stone Star shine, mood glow This shows that she is acknowledging all the things that she wants to help her through her situation. She hates being stuck in the repetitive life, where she doesnt get any rest. Nobody likes that and nor does she. The last line of this stanza reads, Youre all that I can call my own This is really interesting, because how can you own an element. You cant. I think this means all she has to hang on to, to own, is the support and motivation she gets off nature. She does this so that she can feel secure that one day she will get her life back and not be all alone. The last four stanzas suggest that she is living in a fantasy. That when she was writing the poem she got lost in it and put all the correct punctuation in because thats how she pictures it in her mind. The second poem we studied was called Overheard in County Sligo. This title immediately suggests that if its overheard then all the facts wont be in there. It would be like a simple game of Chinese Whispers. The message changes every time it reaches somebody new, due to people forgetting things, or people mishearing things or people just changing things. So this gives an immediate impression of an unclear, misleading and ambiguous poem. Like I did with Woman Work I am going to write about plot of Overheard in County Sligo in a nutshell. This is probably a conversation about between a woman and her friend, telling the friend about her life. It could also be a soliloquy which is A dramatic or literary form of discourse in which a character talks to herself or reveals his or her thoughts without addressing a listener, so she might have just been writing or saying her thoughts out loud. So this woman married a man from County Roscommon, which is in Ireland along with County Sligo. She lives on the farm. She wants to feel happy for what she has but she thinks she could have achieved much more. I know that this woman lives in Ireland because Count Sligo and Count Roscommon are mentioned which are both in Ireland. She live at the back of beyond and married a man from Roscommon I know this because the poem says, I married a man from County Roscommon and I live in the back and beyond At the moment this means absolutely nothing. It wont mean anything until I elaborate further on the significance of the marriage later in the essay. The back and beyond, is a very secluded area, its very picturesque. This poem suggests that she lives on a farm, its suggests this by saying in line three and four of stanza one, with a field of cows and a yard of hens and six white geese on the pond This shows that she lives on a farm; there is no evidence in the poem that she does any work on the farm. It does not mention if she does or doesnt. It may just be her husband that works on the farm and not her. At this point she has not shown any evidence that she is not happy with her life, it just acts as a bit of background information on what is currently going on in her life. The first two lines of stanza two dont give much away either, they just mention that outside the door is the corn, which can be harvested for food and money. Again there is no evidence in the poem that she does any work with the corn. The third and fourth lines are very interesting though. They read, and the road runs down through the open gate and freedoms there for the taking.

Ancient Egyptian Cuisine and Food Habits

Ancient Egyptian Cuisine and Food Habits Among the ancient civilizations, Egyptians enjoyed better foods than most did, thanks to the presence of the Nile River flowing through most of settled  Egypt, fertilizing the land with periodic flooding and providing a source of water for irrigating crops and watering livestock. The proximity of Egypt to the Middle East made trade easy, and hence Egypt enjoyed foodstuffs from foreign countries as well, and their cuisine was heavily influenced by outside eating habits.   The diet of the ancient Egyptians depended on their social position and wealth. Tomb paintings, medical treatises, and archaeology reveal a variety of foods. Peasants and slaves would, of course, eat a limited diet, including the staples of bread and beer, complemented by dates, vegetables, and pickled and salted fish, but the wealthy had a much larger range to choose from. For wealthy Egyptians, available food choices were easily as broad as they are for many people in the modern world.   Grains Barley, spelt,  or emmer wheat provided the basic material for bread, which was leavened by sourdough or yeast. Grains were mashed and fermented for beer, which was not so much a recreational drink as a means of creating a safe beverage from river waters that were not always clean. Ancient Egyptians consumed a great deal of beer, mostly brewed from barley.   The annual flooding of plains alongside the Nile and other rivers made the soils quite fertile for growing grain crops, and the rivers themselves were channeled with irrigation ditches to water crops and sustain domestic animals. In ancient times, the Nile River Valley, especially the upper delta region, was by no means a desert landscape.   Wine Grapes were grown for wine. Grape cultivation was adopted from other parts of the Mediterranean in about 3,000 BCE, with Egyptians modifying practices to their local climate. Shade structures were commonly used, for example, to protect grapes from the intense Egyptian sun. Ancient Egyptian wines were primarily reds and were probably used mostly for ceremonial purposes for the upper classes. Scenes carved in ancient pyramids and temples show scenes of wine-making. For common people, beer was a more typical drink.   Fruit and Vegetables Vegetables cultivated and consumed by ancient Egyptians included onions, leeks, garlic, and lettuce. Legumes included lupines, chickpeas, broad beans, and lentils. Fruit included melon, fig, date, palm coconut, apple, and pomegranate. The carob was used medicinally and, perhaps, for food. Animal Protein Animal protein was a less common food for ancient Egyptians than it is for most modern consumers. Hunting was somewhat rare, though it was pursued by commoners for sustenance and by the wealthy for sport.  Domesticated animals, including oxen, sheep, goats, and swine, provided dairy products, meat, and by-products, with blood from sacrificial animals used for blood sausages, and beef and pork fat used for cooking. Pigs, sheep, and goats provided most meat consumed; beef was considerably more expensive and was consumed by commoners only for celebratory or ritual meals. Beef was eaten more regularly by royalty.   Fish caught in the Nile River provided an important source of protein for poor people and was eaten less frequently by the wealthy, who had greater access to domesticated pigs, sheep, and goats.   There is also evidence the poorer Egyptians consumed rodents, such as mice and hedgehogs, in recipes calling for them to be baked. Geese, ducks, quail, pigeons, and pelicans were available as fowl, and their eggs were also eaten. Goose fat was also used for cooking. Chickens, however, seem to have not been present in ancient Egypt until the 4th or 5th centuries BCE.   Oils and Spices Oil was derived from ben-nuts. There were also sesame, linseed and castor oils. Honey was available as a sweetener, and vinegar may have also been used. Seasonings included salt, juniper, aniseed, coriander, cumin, fennel, fenugreek, and poppyseed.

Potpourri of Misspellings Potpourri of Misspellings Potpourri of Misspellings By Maeve Maddox Strolling along Internet Boulevard one morning, I encountered more than the usual quota of misspelled-words-per-minute.
